Happy birthday, [personal profile] plaid_slytherin! This cupcake brought to you by my own current adventure in preparing pandoro for this evening's trifle. (About to pour the backup cake into its pan, that's how well things are going at the moment.)

[100 words, T (for homophobia), with characters/fanon borrowed from The Apple, the Snake, and the Angel. Apocrypha for now (will add to series later, if nothing's jossed it by the time we get Bruno to Balliol)]

When the agents gathered in the smoking room, Clearwater hadn’t expected the conversation to remain centered on literal trifle, but Margaret Gudgeon had been much taken with Curtis’s rendition of the dessert, and all their colleagues fascinated—not entirely willingly—by Curtis’s easy recital of the domestic debacles he’d had to muddle through in the course of mastering company-worthy cake.

With Curtis out of earshot—seeing to a cranky child—young Simmons cheekily suggested, “Isn’t he good at cake because he’s a poof?”

Clearwater retorted, “He’s good at seeing things through—and seeing through things, be it cakes or façades.”

The KJC Discord possum minyan has been discussing what makes a hanukkiah (not) kosher.

(An artist who researched the topic for illustration purposes a while back: "[The lights] can't be in a circle because the candles should all be visible with no visual overlap when viewed straight on. I think a slight semicircle is okay but my understanding was it has to be a straight line and any height difference has to be gradual and differentiable from the shamash.")

The Crack at the Heart of Everything )

I ended up posting 38K - more than half of it after posting the bus pass for my true assignment, in spite of researching and tussling with the plotbunnies for both the Think of England and Cynster fics for months. I didn't actually offer standalone ToE for the exchange (PS and I matched on David Blaize) but the title and closing scene pretty much blindsided me like two hours after I opened the assignment email ... and I still ended up revising for dear life until two minutes before work reveals:

    Parenthood hadn’t mellowed out da Silva a single whit. In fact, if the steady stream of scathing memos from Barton Street were any indication, it had pared the man’s threshold for tolerating fools from low to none.

    Pettigrew hadn’t expected his first briefing at da Silva’s home to be so pleasant. Tea was delicious, the chairs comfortably well cushioned, and da Silva uncharacteristically congenial, even when Curtis kept excusing himself to attend to an apparently unhappy child, although the screaming was audible only when the door was open.

    “The right partner does makes things more manageable,” da Silva eventually allowed.

    100 words. Lilywhite Boys (with a nod to England World) futurefic. Prompt: a cozy corner

    Keeping the Mincing Lane room proved to be one of Alec’s wisest decisions during the long game that he and Jerry continued to play. It was professionally convenient to maintain the same address, and Mrs. Barzowski’s nephew was a jolly successor to his aunt. The garret was a convenient bolt-hole for Alec’s own nephews and nieces, biological and honorary, and by the time the stairs had become too much for him, William Talliefer’s eldest son had demonstrated a knack for inserting himself into misadventures thanks to his work for a private bureau. The room would absolutely stay with the family.

    Three 100-word drabbles, prompted by "the first time."

    Dedicated to PerfectlySteadfast, for sharing the Think of England brainrot and surviving nights on fire.

    ==
    The first time Archie isn’t able to protect Daniel feels like a failure to him, even though it isn’t remotely his fault that Daniel chose to sneak into Lord Rotier’s kitchen without informing him. Daniel escaped from the butler with only a sprained wrist and a ruined jacket, but despite all his claims about lack of imagination, Archie can too easily envision how much worse the consequences could have been.

    It’s one of the stories he tells Will Darling when they first meet. He has quite a few, and he kisses Daniel all the more possessively when they get home.

    ==

    The first time Archie succumbs to the urge to throw Daniel down on a bed and make him scream aloud—it isn’t after a fight, or a miscommunication, or Daniel taunting him with swaying hips and sly double entendres. It’s after a four-hour council of war at the Bureau, with Daniel tirelessly keeping pace with Vaizey’s observations and finetuning the game plan with brilliant suggestions and inventive requests.

    At home, Daniel’s mask falls away, and Archie sees all the tension he’d concealed from his colleagues. The look on his face after Archie proceeds to ravish him thoroughly is sheer gratitude.

    ==

    Between them, they put out metaphorical fires practically every day, but the first time a literal fire erupts in their flat, it’s because of ducks. Archie hadn’t known how much fat melts out of ducks when they’re roasted, and the small oven hadn’t been designed to accommodate gourmet cooking goals.

    At Daniel’s raised eyebrow, Archie said, “You really liked the confit at Lucy Arbuthnot’s last week. I was hoping to recreate it for us.”

    Daniel pulled Archie close and brushed his lips against Archie’s ear. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions. But so’s the path to heaven.”

    bronze_ribbons: Dee and Ryo from FAKE in deep kiss (Dee/Ryo liplock)
    FAKE: I made some tiny revisions to the bit of "Not as Dumb" chapter 5 I posted, and I reckon I'll manage a couple new scenes by April 7, which is the deadline for posting under the Crack the WiP umbrella. Realistically, I doubt I'll be done by then -- work and workshops aside, there's old canon to review, new canon and "behind the scenes" bonuses that I may or may not look at (much less incorporate), and assorted notes. I dipped a bit into all three today. It's all progress, even if I don't finish baking it all until July. That's more hopeful than I felt about it a year ago.

    England Series/Green Men/Dark Is Rising: I've added a handful of drabbles to "Difficult" since Chocobox. Mrs da Silva feeds soup to Archie, Sam Caldwell invites Will Stanton to explain himself over drinks, and more.

    Gardening: one of the local nurseries posted an IG story today, encouraging the setting out of perennials and sowing of leafy greens. As documented in the home journal, I am feeling both battered and accomplished after today's hour-ish of yardwork. Inside, we are enjoying a white rose in full bloom and assorted pink, purple, and orange Christmas/Easter cacti flowers.

    Exhibit A: the KJC Discord server. People were throwing down about latkes vs. hamentaschen across at least three channels the past two days. (There's an entertaining overlap of observant Jews and U Chicago grads . . .)

    Exhibit B: 47 pages of comments in response to International Fanworks Day Feedback Fest 2022. It took me a while to find mine again: 3 recs apiece for England Series and Green Men

    The tentacled clock that Musigneus gave me a few birthdays ago (I'll post a pic later) truly came in handy today, as I was formatting slides for my presentation until 3 minutes before the seminar, which meant I didn't rehearse the whole thing, which meant adjusting it on the fly (which, admittedly, I anticipated having to do) as I hit slide 15 out of 24 with 5 minutes left. As one does.

    I hit up my beta for Spring Exchange with the concept I'm going to run with, and the response was hilariously profane. Now to actually write the thing . . .
